Selecting the most suitable length of wheel chair ramp

Always select the longest possible wheel chair ramp. The longer the ramp, the less the gradient to overcome. In general the following lengths of wheelchair ramps are recommended in relation to the gradient indicated:

For independent users of manual wheel chairs: Max. gradient 1:7.
For manual wheelchairs pushed by a helper and for electric wheel chairs: Max. gradient 1:5.

Example: To overcome a height difference of 20 cm and a maximum gradient of 1:5 a ramp of 100 cm would be suitable (5 x 20 = 100).

A gradient of 1:12 is desirable where possible.

Further see the below diagram.

Please note: This diagram applies to the use of portable wheel chair ramps and should not be applied to more permanent ramping systems.
